I. The North-Western and Central Arid and Semi-Arid Region:
This region has the largest number of goats. Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Plains of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, include in this region.
The origin of this breed is between Jamuna, Gangas and Chambal rivers. It is the biggest and most popular breed of India. The breed has been extensively utilised for milk and meat (dual purpose).
The ears are very long, flat and drooping. Both sexes are horned with short and thin tail, a thick growth of hair is present on the buttocks, known as feathers. The milk production is 1.5-2.0 kg per day.
2. Barbari:
Probably, the originated of this breed was in the city of Barabera in British Somali land in East Africa.
Small animals with compact body. The colour of this breed is white with small light brown patches. Ears are short, tubular and erect.
Daily milk yield averages about 750 mL-1000 mL.
3. Beetal:
The breed is found throughout the state of Punjab and Haryana. The body weight of adult male is 50-62 kg and female weight is 35-40 kg.
The breed is good dairy type, the ears are long and flat, curled and drooping. Both sexes have thick, medium sized horns. The tail is small and thin. The average daily yield is 2.0 kg and per lactation varies from 150-190 kg.
The breed is good dairy breed. The colour is white. Widely distributed in Surat and Baroda, Body weight of male 30 kg, female is 32 kg.
Medium sized breed, ears are medium in size. The breed is unable to walk long distances. They are most economic. Both sexes have small horns directed backward. The breed is good milk producer, the average yield is 2.0 kg/day.

The breed is found in Jhakrana and few surrounding village near Behror of Alwar district of Rajasthan. This breed is very good dairy type. Body weight of adult male is 55 kg and adult female weight is 45 kg. The breed is large and colour is black with white spots on ears and muzzle. These breed are used mainly for milk production. The average milk yield varies from 2.0-3.0 kg daily.
The breed is found in Kutch district in Gujarat. The body weight of adult male 43 kg and adult female is 35 kg. The average milk of the breed varies around 1.5 kg daily.
The breed is found in Sirohi district of Rajasthan. The ratio of body weight of male and female is 50:40. These are medium sized animals. The colour of this breed is brown with light brown patches. The body is covered. Ears are flat and leaf like structure. The breed is used usually for meat. Milk yield is poor, about 0.5 kg/day.
The breed is found in Gujarat (Rajkot and Surendra Nagar district). They are large, black colour with white marking on ear. Ears are usually long, wide leaf like structure. The average daily yield is 1.5 kg.
2. The Southern Peninsular Region:

The goats are large in size. Goats colour is mostly black and rest are white brown or spotted. The breed are used for dual purpose for milk and meat. Average daily yield varies from 0.5 to 1.5 kg.
The breed are mostly found in Malappuram districts of Kerala. The average body weight of male and female is 38 kg and 30 kg. They medium sized animals. The colour of this breed is fully white or black. All males and few females are bearded and medium sized ears.
The breed is mostly found in Pune and Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. The body weight of the male is 38 kg and female weight is 29 kg. The breed is medium size. Colour is white, black or brown with spots of other colours. Ears are drooping. The average milk production is 0.5-1.0 kg per day.
Only 25% of total goat population of the country is found in this region.

Breed is short-legged, compact animal. Well known for excellent mutton and skin quality. Animals are small. The colour is black, grey and white also found. Beards are found in both sexes. This breed is very poor in milk yield. Its meat is very tender and good test.
Southern Odisha is the home of this breed. Average body weight of male is 44 kg and female 31.0 kg. Animals are tall. Both sexes have straight horns directly upward and slightly backward.
4. The Northern Temperate Region:
Only 2.8% of total goat population of the country found in this region.

Largely the breed are found in changthangi region of Ladakh. The breed is also known as Pashmina. They are medium sized animals. Some animals are white in colour and some are black, grey or brown colour. This breed looks pretty and is used for transport in hilly areas. Body is covered with long coarse hair. Apart from meat, the hair is used for making of shawl (Kashmiri shawl).
The breed also known as Himalayan breed, because this breed mostly found in hilly tract. The average body weight of males is 27 kg and female weight is 25 kg. Animals are medium sized. The colour is mostly white but black and brown also seen. Both sexes have large horns, ears are medium, long and drooping skin is very tough.
