On the basis of agroclimate, jute growing tracts of India are broadly grouped into eight zones.
1. Lower Bengal-Ganga Riverine Tract:
Important jute growing districts are Hooghly, 24 Paraganas, Nadia and Murshidabad. This is mainly olitorius tract.
2. Malda-Dianjpur Tract:
Malda and west Dinajpur districts are included in this zone. Both olitorius and capsularis jutes are grown.
3. North Bengal and Bramhaputra Valley New Alluvium:
This zone consists of Cooch- Behar and Jalpaiguri districts of W Bengal and Golpara, Kamrup and Nowgong districts of Assam. It is mainly capsularis tract.
4. Tripura, Cachora Old Alluvium:
This tract has limited area but the yield is higher. It is capsularis area.
5. Koshi, Purnca and Saharsa Area:
In Bihar, Purnea and Saharsa are important jute growing areas. Purnea district has maximum area under jute in India. It is mainly capsularis tract.
6. Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga Area:
These two districts in Bihar grow mostly capsularis jute.
7. NW Bihar and E UP:
In this area capsularis is mostly grown in Champaran district of Bihar and Baharaich, Sitapur and Lakhimpur and Kheri district of UP.
8. Cuttack-Balasore Area:
Jute is mainly grown in Balasore, Cuttack, Sambalpur and Puri districts. It is capsularis tract. Olitorius is grown in uplands.
